Noel Wood was born in 1912 in Strathalbyn, South Australia. Wood studied in Adelaide under Marie Tuck (1866 - 1947), after which he lived and painted on Kangaroo Island off the coast of South Australia. About 1940 he moved to Bedarra Island where he lived for the next 60 years, apart from a period spent in England and Europe working and studying at the end of World War II. He painted numerous tropical scenes, and is considered to be one of the first painters to depict the far North Queensland in works of fine art.
