Merv Fitzhenry was born in Sydney, and after leaving school he worked as an apprentice jockey, a boxer and a wharfie. In 1971 while still working as a wharfie he took up photography. He has established a reputation as a black and white documentary photographer and his work has been displayed at The Sydney International Exhibition of Photography in 2004, and at the State Library of New South Wales.
