John Middleditch was born at Port Chalmers in 1906 and received his early education in Dunedin, where he studied at King Edward Technical College. He trained as an engineering draughtsman and worked in this field for some years while pursuing woodcarving and drawing as hobbies. In 1945, at the end of his war service, Middleditch began studies at the Dunedin School of Art. In 1950 he was a founding member of the 'New Group' of artists, with whom he exhibited in woodcarving, oils and watercolours. In 1962 he became a full-time sculptor working primarily in wood, bronze, copper and aluminium.

The total number of works by John Middleditch offered for sale by auction since 2000 is 34, of which 20 (59%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,500 for School of Fish sold by Dunbar Sloane in July 2023. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by John Middleditch are held by the Christchurch Art Gallery.
