John H. Taylor was born in Melbourne in 1921 and he commenced art studies at Footscray Technical College, Melbourne in 1939 but his studies were interrupted by World War II, where he served with the Australian Infantry Forces. After war service he resumed his studies at Melbourne Technical College from 1945 to 1946 and at the George Bell school in 1948. He also visited London and studied at Chelsea Polytechnic in the early 1950s. A painter and printmaker, he exhibited in Melbourne in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
