Born in Sydney in 1936, Brian Stratton left school at 15 and studied part time at the National Art School, Sydney while working in the printing industry. At 22 he became a teacher of art at the National Art School, later working full time in this position. He retired from teaching in 1990 to paint full time. He was President Australian Watercolour Institute and exhibited with them for over 60 years, a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of NSW, and was awarded the order of Australia medal in 2006 for services to art.
