Born in Auckland in 1883, Frederick Porter studied with C. F. Goldie, in Melbourne, and at the Academie Julian in Paris under J. P. Laurens. During World War I he worked for the British Government as a draughtsman and designer. A painter of landscapes and still lifes, he was a member of the London Group from 1916. He was well thought of as a contemporary artist and he found influential patrons in John Maynard Keynes and Samuel Courtauld. They later purchased a number of works for the Courtauld Collection. His work is also included in the Tate Gallery in London as well as New Zealand's National Art Gallery and Auckland City Art Gallery.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,076 for Hickling Broad sold by FishersOnlineArt/ Fishers Fine Arts in March 1995.
