Born in the United Kingdom in 1894, Roland Hipkins studied at the Royal College of Art in London. He moved to New Zealand in 1922 to take up a teaching position at Napier Technical College. In 1929 he began teaching at the Technical School of Art in Wellington, where he remained until his death in 1951. Hipkin's work is descriptive, with modernist tendencies in its emphasis on pattern and colour.
