Born in New Zealand in 1882, Gruner moved to Sydney as a child, and later studied at the Julian Ashton School. His impressionistic traditional-style paintings of lush pastures and landscapes made him one of the most successful painters of the 1910-38 period. Gruner exhibited at the Royal Academy and New Salon, Paris, and also exhibited at the first exhibition of the contemporary group at Grosvenor Gallery with Moore, Wakelin and Lambert. He won the Wynne Prize for landscape painting seven times between 1916 and 1939.
