Painter, draughtsman, art teacher and surveyor Patrick Hogan was born in Dublin, Ireland. He migrated to Auckland in 1849, where he taught drawing, published lithographs and worked as a surveyor, then moved to Sydney in 1858 where he worked in the New South Wales Surveyor-General's Department, continuing as an amateur artist in his spare time. He was a participant in the New South Wales Academy of Art's first exhibition in 1872 and at the Metropolitan Intercolonial Exhibition organised by the Agricultural Society of New South Wales in 1874.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $6,303 for Campbells Point, Parnell. Fairlawn Homestead, Home of John Charles Blackett sold by International Art Centre in July 2009. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Patrick Hogan are held by the Auckland Art Gallery.
