Selby Warren was born in 1897 in Bathurst NSW. He commenced painting in the 1960s after working at various occupations including shearing, rabbiting, mining and cutting railway sleepers. This life experience provided the inspiration for his paintings. He lived in the village of Trunkey Creek near Bathurst. Bathurst Regional Art Gallery in partnership with the Sydney College of the Arts held a retrospective exhibition of his work in 2014.

The total number of works by Selby Warren offered for sale by auction since 1975 is 32, of which 23 (72%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,560 for Untitled Figure (After Davida Allen) sold by Lawson~Menzies (now trading as Menzies) in September 2008. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2021.
