Australian Aboriginal artist Maureen Thompson was born in 1931 on Nutwood Downs Station about 500 km south of Darwin. After the death of her father, she travelled with her mother to the Mission at Ngukurr, where she attended the school during the day and worked in the vegetable garden in the evenings. As an adult Maureen moved out of the mission and eventually moved to Darwin after having 12 children. She went on to study the Bible and she became a pastor but didn't take up painting until the late 1980's when she moved back to Ngukurr and saw other artists at work. She became a senior member of Ngukurr Arts but her career was cut short by ill health.
