About Trevor Nickolls
Born in Port Adelaide in 1949, Australian Aboriginal artist Trevor Nickolls studied at the South Australian School of Art in North Adelaide South Australia from 1967 to 1970. His work combined the disparate influences of Aboriginal art and Western art thereby creating a union between traditional and non-traditional art, and was recognised as the first urban Aboriginal artist. He spent most of the second half of the 1980s living and working in Melbourne prior to being selected as a joint official representative with Rover Thomas for the 1990 Venice Biennale.
The total number of works by Trevor Nickolls offered for sale by auction since 1990 is 154, of which 94 (61%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $53,525 for Roving in Thomas Town 1994 sold by Deutscher~Menzies in June 2000. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Trevor Nickolls are held by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and a further five major public national galleries (see list below).
