Born in France in 1821, Charles Meryon was a French naval officer, draughtsman, etcher and sculptor. From 1842 to 1846 he was stationed at Akaroa in New Zealand, and from there he visited other ports - including Hobart - making drawings of the scenery, the wildlife and native inhabitants. On his return to Paris in 1846, he began making sculptures, and also producing etchings from his travels to Australasia. However, he began to lose his sanity and spent some years in an asylum in Paris.
The total number of works by Charles Meryon offered for sale by auction since 1974 is 17, of which 10 (59%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,225 for New Zealand, Near Banks Peninsula Charbonnier's Point, Akaroa. 'Peche A. La Seine' sold by Webb's in March 1994. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2020. Works by Charles Meryon are held by the Christchurch Art Gallery, National Gallery of Victoria and a further five major public national galleries (see list below).
