Wayne Barrar was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1957. He completed a Bachelor of Science from the University of Canterbury in 1979 and a Post Graduate Diploma of Fine Arts at Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland in 1996. He was awarded a number of international artist residencies and received New Zealand Arts Council grants in 1991 and 2002.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,194 for Beneath Bowen Falls to Mitre Peak, Fiordland 2000 sold by Art+Object in November 2016. This year one work has been offered for sale.
