Born in Toowoomba, Queensland in 1900, Ellen Maloney began painting when in her 50s. A painter of the primitive school, she completed an art diploma by correspondence and held her first solo exhibition at the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education in 1975. Her subjects were taken from the surrounding countryside and depicted the lives of the residents of the area.
