Born in Auckland New Zealand in 1927, Ian McMillan studied at the Elam School, Auckland. He lived in Rotorua from the 1950's to 2000's and died in Auckland in 2007 aged 80 years. His works are in watercolours and oil, and he was also a potter, which he created, fired and glazed in his Rotorua studio in the 1970's to 1990's. His work is included in the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $6,015 for Carrying Cargo sold by Webb's in August 2017. This year one work has been offered for sale.
