Frank Watters was born in the town of Muswellbrook in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. He left school at the age of 15 and moved to Sydney, working in factories before discovering painting. In 1964 he opened a gallery in Darlinghurst with Alex and Geoffrey Webb, living on the floor above the gallery. He travelled to the United Kingdom, Europe and Brazil on a study tour in 1973/74. He started as a painter, but his career as an artist was short lived as he pursued a career as a gallerist. Watters Gallery nurtured the careers of major Australian artists for more than 50 years. In 2017, he made a generous gift to the Art Gallery of NSW when he donated over 30 artworks from his personal collection. The gallery closed in 2018 and he moved to his property in central west New South Wales where he passed away on 21 May 2020.
