Rachel Martens was born in Sydney in 1838, the eldest daughter of the painter Conrad Martens and his wife, and was taught to paint by her father. She exhibited from time to time with the NSW Academy of Art in the 1870s, with the Art Society of NSW in the 1880s and at the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879. Mostly she painted Sydney seascapes or landscapes in watercolour, occasionally in oils, but she also did plant studies and sketches of the family home.
The earliest auction listing we have for Rebecca Martens is in 1980 and in total 22 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 13 (59%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $7,170 for St. Thomas's, North Shore (Sydney, Circa 1875) sold by Leski Auctions Pty. Ltd in May 2021.
