Born in Manly, Sydney in 1927, Peter Travis studied sculpture, ceramics and industrial design at the East Sydney Technical College. A designer, teacher and ceramic artist, he is known as one of Australia's finest ceramicists. A winner of ceramic awards in Poland and Italy, his work is represented in the Australian National Collection, in most state and many regional galleries. In 2008 Travis was made Member of the Order of Australia for his outstanding contribution to the visual arts, crafts, design and art education.

The earliest auction listing we have for Peter Travis is in 1978 and in total 20 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 12 (60%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $4,800 for Stoneware Sculpture c. 1971 sold by Shapiro Auctioneers in September 2006. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2016. Works by Peter Travis are held by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and a further four major public national galleries (see list below).
