Born at Clunes, Victoria, John Longstaff studied at the National Gallery School and at Paris under F. Cormon. He won the first National Gallery Travelling Scholarship in 1887 and achieve Honourable Mention at the Paris Salon in 1891 and Royal Academy in 1893. He was appointed an Official artist in World War I. He was the founder and first president of the Australian Academy of Art, and the first Australian painter to be knighted in 1928. He was the winner of Archibald Prize five times.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $61,500 for Master Rupert Ryan sold by Bonhams in August 2021.
