Born in Melbourne in 1890, MacKenzie studied at the Royal Art School, Sydney from 1920 to 1927. She taught art at secondary level in the 1920s and was a lecturer in art at the Sydney Teachers' College from 1941. Pimarly a landscape artist, working in oils, she exhibited with the Royal Art Society, the New South Wales Society of Artists and the Society of Women Painters in London. Her work is represented in the National Collection in Canberra.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,500 for Wharves and Ships, Sydney Harbour sold by Mason Gray in November 1989. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Isabel MacKenzie are held by the Art Gallery of NSW and National Gallery of Australia.
