Born in England in 1832, Waite studied in the UK and Paris. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1863, becoming a member of the Royal Society of British Artists a decade later. Waite arrived in Australia in 1886. He was an early member of the Australian Artists' Association and a foundation member of the Victorian Artists' Society. He painted portraits of the leading citizens of Victoria in the 1880s and 1890s. He is also known for his landscapes of Tasmania and the Ovens Valley area of Victoria.
