Born in Lower Hutt, new Zealand in 1927, Allan Mitchell is the son of the well known graphic designer Leonard Mitchell. He was educated at the Wellington Technical College he started his career as a house artist for a Wellington printing firm. After World War II he joined his father working as a designer/illustrator. He is best known for his numerous stamp designs for New Zealand Post, including 1960 Pictorial and the 1971 Rose Jubilee Set.
