Al Skaw was born near the Czech border in Austria in 1951. His youth was spent in Austria, France (where he began school) and Germany. In his late teens while attending art school in the USA he was conscripted into the United States military and served with Military Intelligence in Vietnam and Munich(?) Germany. He did not return to the USA after his military service was completed but instead travelled the world, finally arriving in Sydney about 1973. He later moved to Tasmania where he established a reputation in the Australian art world. He lived there until his wife died unexpectedly about 2001 whereupon he left Australia for Canada. Al Skaw has the reputation for being an intensely private man and now lives and paints in Quebec Canada.
