Born in Marrickville, Sydney in 1905, Cliff Peir studied at the Julian Ashton school from 1929 to 1932, becoming a painter, illustrator, printmaker critic and advertising artist. He travelled and worked in Europe in 1952. After travelling to Central Australia, Peir painted a series of paintings in the style of Sir Russell Drysdale.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,075 for Girl Sewing sold by Bonhams in April 2023.
