Born in England in 1834, Charles Muntz arrived in New Zealand in 1858 and began farming stud stock near Nelson. He later studied painting under John Gully, accompanying him and J. C. Richmond on sketching tours. Muntz exhibited in Wellington between 1878 and 1884. Much of his work was destroyed by fire in 1904.
