One of Australia's most successful contemporary artists, Charles Blackman was born in Sydney in 1928, and left school at the age of 13 to work at the Sydney Sun newspaper as an illustrator and copyboy. He married in 1951 and the following year moved to Melbourne where he was able to pursue his love of art full time, and recognition came with the exhibition of his Schoolgirl series of paintings, followed several years later by the Alice in Wonderland series. He lived in and exhibited in London for several years in the 1960's. In the 1990s the National Gallery of Victoria organised a major touring restrospective of his work, followed by a 50th Anniversary exhibition of the Alice in Wonderland series in 2006.

Charles Blackman is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1969 of 9,209, of which 6,093 (66%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,891,000 for Mad Hatter's Tea Party 1956 sold by Sotheby's in November 2017. In addition to this sale, a further 6 works by this artist have been sold for over $1 million. This year 106 works have been offered for sale. Works by Charles Blackman are held by the National Gallery of Australia, Heide Museum of Modern Art and a further ten major public national galleries (see list below).
