Born in Melbourne in 1927, Stephen Walker studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and in Tasmania, where he moved in 1948. A sculptor (mainly in bronze) and painter, he travelled and worked extensively in Europe sculpting under Henry Moore from 1954 to 1956 and visiting Rome, Florence and Prague through scholarships. On his return, he continued to live in Tasmania. He was made a member of the Order of Australia in 1985, and in 2011, he was inducted into the Music Victoria Hall of Fame.
We have records of art auction sales by Stephen Walker from 1973 and in total 32 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 29 (91%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $6,600 for (Albatross and Waves) sold by Colville Auctions Pty. Ltd. in March 2024. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Stephen Walker are held by the Queensland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of NSW and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
