Bill Mearns was born in Dundee Scotland in 1931 into a family with a very long seafaring tradition and has always been keenly interested in the sea and ships. He worked as a construction manager in the British Midlands, before migrating to Australia in 1970 with his family. He is a self taught marine artist, working in watercolour predominantly painting vintage sail or working craft. However, he also does commissions for naval ships, commercial vessels, and private owners. He now lives and works in Tasmania, where he exhibits and maintains a permanent presence in several Hobart Galleries. He is a member of Australian Society of Marine Artists.
