Born in Victoria in 1936, Robert Ingpen studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology where he was awarded a Diploma of Art (Graphic Arts) in 1957. A painter and industrial designer, he became senior artist for the CSIRO's Agricultural Liaison section in 1961. From 1968 he worked as a freelance author, illustrator, and designer. In 1986 he was the winner of the prestigious, International Hans Christian Andersen Medal for Illustration. In 2005 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Ingpen's commissioned works include murals and the Cook Bi-Centenary stamps for Australia Post.
