Rita Hall was born in the Netherlands in 1947, arriving in Australia in 1951. She was educated in country South Australia and began her Art training at the S.A. School of Art, commencing the Art Teachers course in 1966 and in 1968, she commenced teaching at Whyalla, S.A. as an art teacher. In 1975 she was awarded a full time scholarship to complete an advanced diploma in art majoring in printmaking. Influential teachers at this time included Franz Kempf, Barbara Hanrahan and Geoff Wilson. From 1989 to 2000 she taught at the University of South Australia as a contract lecturer. Hall travelled to Europe and England in 1976, visiting major art centres and galleries. As a full time artist, from 1979 to 1987 Hall developed a textile production studio, screen printing images of Australian flora and fauna. In 1981 she was the commissioned to create 30 major art works for the new Adelaide Hilton International Hotel, and many major commissions and solo exhibitions followed. In 1987 she return to her real love, printmaking on paper and the following year she produced a series of Australian Bird prints as 10 linocuts in editions of 100. In 1991-92 Hall completed a Master of Visual Art degree at the University of S.A. During her study she developed a unique collographic technique of printmaking incorporating etching, lithography and relief methods. In 2006 she finally relinquished her etching press to concentrate on the relatively new discipline, for her, of painting on canvas.
We have records of art auction sales by Rita Hall from 1989 and in total 30 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 17 (57%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,972 for Tied Pillow sold by Elder Fine Art in August 2020. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
