Melbourne artist Graham A. Thorley won the Herald newspaper Junior Art Exhibition aged 17 in 1939 and studied at Swinburne Art School. A portrait, landscape and figural artist, it was this later category that caused comment when he exhibited at the Velasques Gallery in Melbourne in 1946 with the Herald's art critic [CT] commenting: "According to the canons of art and humor it is permissible for people to be clothed or nude; it is not permissible (except in French revue) to accentuate nudity with odd articles of clothing such as hats, stockings etc." The art critic for The Argus newspaper, Alan McCulloch was similarly scathing in his review. He exhibited at the Atheneum Gallery in 1948 1954 and 1955 and at the lower Kozminsky Gallery in 1951. A prolific entrant in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, he was a finalist in 1939, 1940, 1945, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1976 and a finalist in the Wynne Prize in 1954.
