Photographer Richard Woldendorp was born in Utrecht, The Netherlands in 1927. He joined the Dutch army at the age of nineteen and was posted to Indonesia. After three years his company was moved out the servicemen, were encouraged by the Australian government to apply for immigration which he did in 1951, settling in Fremantle, Western Australia. It wasn't until 1955 on a trip back to Holland that he purchased his first camera, settling him on a career for the rest of his life. He became a freelance photographer, working for magazines, government departments and mining companies. This involved extensive travel and introduced him to the outback and the Australian landscape and lead him to specialise to landscape aerial photography. He has had over 38 solo exhibitions throughout Western Australia and in Sydney, Melbourne, and overseas. In 2012 he was awarded the Order of Australia "For service to the arts as an Australian landscape photographer".
