Born in Sydney in 1971, Alexander McKenzie studied at the City Art Institute, Sydney in 1989 and the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney from 1991 to 1993 at which he was awarded the Inaugural Whiteley Scholarship.the following year. The same year he was awarded a residency at Riversdale-Bundanon, under the Arthur Boyd Bequest. From 1995-2002 he studied and travelled in England, Ireland, France, Scotland and Italy. From 1997 to 2020 he has held 27 solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney and London, and participated in many group exhibitions including the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize on six occasions and the Art Gallery of New South Wales Wynne Prize on eight occasions. He lives and works in Sydney.
