Born in 1968 in Forestville, New South Wales, Craig Ruddy was awarded Diplomas in Interior Design, Graphic Design and Fashion Illustration in 1988 and began painting full time in 2002. In the following years he lived and worked in Spain, Argentina and Brazil, before settling in Byron Bay, New South Wales. From 2003 he has held regular solo exhibitions in Sydney, and in 2006 in London. Craig Ruddy was the winner of the 2004 Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize for a charcoal drawing of David Gulpilil. This award resulted in a court battle regading whether the winning portrait was a painting or drawing. The judge declared that Ruddy should win the case and that he should keep the prize. He was a finalist in the Archibald Prize in 2006, 2011 and 2020 and won the people's Choice Award in 2010. Craig Ruddy died of a Covid-19 complications on 4 January 2022 at his home in the Byron Shire of New South Wales.
