Born in Staffordshire, Walter Withers came to Melbourne in 1882. He worked for a period on a farm, and then as a draughtsman, drawing in his spare time. In 1887 Withers went to Paris and he studied for some months at the Academie Julian for a year> He returned in 1887 under engagement to Ferguson and Mitchell to draw the illustrations for the Chronicles of Early Melbourne. He lived first at Kew, and then at Ivanhoe where he was associated with Streeton, Roberts and Conder at the Heidelberg camp. He was the first artist to reside at Charterisville. In 1897 he was awarded the first Wynne Prize. Withers was President of the Victorian Artists' Society 1904-5.
