Born in Sydney in 1884, Gibbons studied at East Sydney Technical College, the Art Society of NSW School, and the National Gallery School, Melbourne. After war service he taught at the East Sydney Technical College and later at the Sydney Art School with Julian Ashton. It is from his 40 year period with the Sydney Art School (whose name he changed to the Julian Ashton Art School in 1942) that he is best remembered. He exhibited regularly at the NSW Society of Artists.
