An English naval officer and watercolorist, Richard Oliver was born in 1811. He visited New Zealand while surveying the Pacific region from 1847 to 1851 in the 'HMS Fly'. He painted and sketched the local landscapes and Maoris. Lithographs were made from some of these and published in 'Lithographic Drawings from Sketches in New Zealand' produced in England in 1852.
