Born in Sydney in 1942, Peter Powditch studied at the East Sydney Technical College and privately with John Olsen from 1960 to 1963, and held a number of part time tertiary lecturing positions from 1960 to the late 1980s. A member of the Sydney Young Contemporaries Group, he first exhibited in Sydney in in 1966 and subsequently in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and Brisbane. He was awarded both the Georges Invitational Prize and the Sir John Sulman Prize in 1972, at the peak of his career. He participated in many major exhibitions including Australian Art Today which toured South East Asia in 1970 and Australian Prints at the Victoria and Albert Museum London in 1972. In 1981, Peter Powditch was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (OA)for his services to art. From a household name in the 1970s, to an introvert living in the Byron hinterland for the last two decades of his life, Peter Powditch was an artist and educator who came to success at the moment when Australia was defining its identity. He died on Saturday, 13 February, 2022 aged 79.
