Born in Italy in 1870, Dattilo Rubbo studied at the Royal Academy in Naples from 1893 to 1897 before coming to Australia in 1897. Rubbo painted in both oil and watercolour and was principally a portrait and figure painter, but also painted landscapes in the style of the tonal impressionists.
