Born in London about 1750 to a family of well known British marine painters, James Cleveley was unofficial artist and carpenter on 'HMS Resolution ' during Captain Cook's third voyage. He is best known for his drawing 'Death of Captain Cook at Hawaii' which was engraved by F. Jukes. Cleveley's work is represented in the Dixson and Mitchell libraries Sydney.
