Edward Roper Stapleton Sandys was the surveyor and paymaster on the 'HMS Opal' commanded by Captain Bosanquet, sailing around the New Zealand coast in the late 1880s. Working in watercolour, charcoal and pencil, Edward Sandys produced drawings of the landscape and plant life. His work is represented in the Turnbull and Hocken libraries.
