Born in Italy in 1946, Zofrea came to Australia as a child in 1956. He studied at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney from 1961 to 1966 and in 1971 made a study tour of Europe. He has had many successful one-man exhibitions. Zofrea was awarded the Sulman Prize in 1977, 1979 and 1982, he received a Power bequest in 1981 and a Churchill Fellowship in 1986. He was a finalist in the Archibald Prize in 2014 and 2018.
