Lewis Morley was born in Hong Kong in 1925. On returning from his first visit to Australia in 1940, he was placed in the Stanley Internment Camp for the duration of the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. After the war, the family was repatriated to London. He studied three years at Twickenham Art School, then moved to Paris in 1952, studying life drawing at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. In the late 1950s, photography became his favoured medium and he worked as a photo-journalist with The Tatler. He became known for his front-of-house images for West End productions and in 1961 opened his on studios in London. In the 1960s he migrated to Australia with his wife and son, where he continued working until his retirement in 1987. In 1989, the National Portrait Gallery in London created an exhibition Lewis Morley: Photographer of the Sixties, which toured Britain, and a retrospective of his work was shown at the State Library of NSW in 1993. In 2006 a major retrospective of his work was shown at the Art Gallery of NSW.
