About Molly Gertrude Johnson
Born in Adelaide, South Australia, Molly Johnson is known as a New South Wales based painter. She studied at Swinburne Technical College, Melbourne and Canterbury College of Fine Art in New Zealand. From 1974 to 1977 she studied and painted in the UK, Europe, USA and Canada. She was a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. Working in oils and pastel, she was principally a landscape painter and portraitist. Molly Johnson exhibited successfully throughout Australia from 1954, as well as in Port Moresby and London. As a portraitist, she was a finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize in 1962. She married Lachlan Johnson in Melbourne in 1945, but retained her maiden name during her artistic career.
The total number of works by Molly Johnson offered for sale by auction since 1976 is 59, of which 36 (61%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,171 for Sydney Harbour from Bradleys Head sold by Graysonline in December 2005. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022.
