Born in Davenport, England in 1840, Frederick Needham arrived in Australia in 1857 when his father was appointed the first Anglican minister at Mt Gambier. Frederick worked for the Surveyors' Department of South Australia, drawing and painting in the state's south east. In 1864 he exhibited several works with with the South Australian Society of Arts, and drew on official expeditions for the South Australian Survey Department, for which he appointed surveyor in 1876. He illustrated the literature for Chaffey's Murray Irrigation scheme in the early 1890s.
