Born in Burnie, Tasmania in 1957, Barbie Kjar was awarded a Bachelor of Education, University of Tasmania in 1975, Bachelor of Fine Arts, University of Tasmania in 1987 and a Master of Fine Arts, RMIT, Melbourne in 2002. Primarily a printmaker (etchings and drypoints) she also creates drawings in charcoal and pastel. She has held about 48 solo shows from 1986 to 2020, mainly in Hobart, but also in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and participated in a number of group shows. She has been awarded artist in residence in Australia, Spain, Greece and the USA.
