A New Zealand artist, born in Whanganui 1924, Denis Turner lived for a time at Waitomo, but later moved to Auckland. From 1947 he exhibited landscapes, animal drawings and works based on Maori and other Oceanic motifs and was also known for his portraits in the 1940s and 1950s. His style has been described as an expressionistic type of realism. He moved to England in 1964 believing that New Zealand could not support full-time career artists. He returned to Whanganui in 1992 to complete a residency where he completed a number of watercolour paintings, some of which were selected for a retrospective exhibition toured by the Auckland University Gus Fisher Gallery in 2014.
