Born in London in 1899, Ian Hassall studied at the London School of Art. He was a staff artist for Windsor & Newton in England. After migrating to Australia in 1949 he became known as a painter, specialising in landscapes, a sculptor and illustrator. He was the first art teacher at Rosanna High School in Victoria, now known as La Trobe University High School, in Victoria, and a director of a commercial open-air gallery, Hassall's Gallery Bazaar, at Eltham in Victoria.
