Born in Geelong in 1902, Warner studied at technical colleges in Geelong and Melbourne, but was self-taught as an artist. Known as a commercial artist, watercolourist and etcher, from 1950 to 1958 he was President of the Victorian Artists Society and a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute from 1950 to 1964. He was appointed an official war artist during World War II, served in New Guinea and Canada, and has 190 works at the Australian War Memorial.
